About Us

We are Praxis Spinal Cord Institute

Praxis is a Canadian-based not-for-profit organization that leads global collaboration in spinal cord injury research, innovation and care. We accelerate the translation of discoveries and best practices into improved treatments for people with spinal cord injuries.

Our vision is a world without paralysis after SCI.

Our mission is to lead collaboration across the global spinal cord injury community by providing resources, infrastructure and knowledge; and to identify, develop, validate and accelerate the translation of evidence and best practices to reduce the incidence and severity of paralysis after SCI, improve health care outcomes, reduce long-term costs, and improve the quality of life for those living with SCI.

The word praxis means the practical application of a theory. This is exactly the type of work we do – moving knowledge into action.

The voice of lived experience is foundational across our focus areas. We ensure individuals with SCI are partners in setting priorities, informing projects, and evaluating outcomes, ensuring that what we support is meaningful and relevant.

Praxis collaborates with national and regional partners to develop SCI care standards, clinical guidelines, and data platforms that help improve health outcomes across the care continuum. Our goal is to support equitable, evidence-informed care for everyone affected by SCI.

From idea to implementation, we support a network of ventures, health system partners, and researchers working to develop technologies and approaches that move solutions from concept to community.

At Praxis, we are driven by our vision of a world without paralysis after SCI. Since 2009, we have worked to make exceptional improvements in the health of people with SCI.

Indigenous perspectives are critical to Praxis’ mission of improving quality of life and health outcomes of all individuals living with spinal cord injury.

Indigenous Peoples’ Liaison Richard Peter is the lead on building relationships and collaborations with the Indigenous community. Richard is supported by a diverse, multi-disciplinary team at Praxis to connect with Indigenous individuals and organizations as well as SCI associations, health care providers, researchers and public policy decision makers to enable inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in SCI research and
