Praxis supports various SCI-related projects by providing in-house data services. We apply complex logic to make sense of data, applying programming and analytical techniques so that data users have the appropriate information they need to investigate a particular question.
Providing Insights To RHSCIR
Praxis provides ongoing data support for RHSCIR – our national Canadian SCI registry – by supporting site data collection from the onset of a person’s injury, through their hospital stay and once they have returned to the community.
Data collection includes the following categories:
- Demographics
Age, sex, city, province and country of residence. - Socio-demographics
Societal characteristics including occupation, education, household income, relationship status, living setting, height, and weight. - Medical history
Prior and current (post-injury) health status, including alcohol use, drug use, and other medical conditions. - Injury details
Cause of SCI, date and time of injury. - Diagnosis
Specific information describing the location of the SCI and any other secondary injuries or complications. - Neurology
Information describing the level and severity of SCI sustained, including motor and sensory scores, neurological level of injury, and ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) - Admission/discharge
Admission and discharge information outlining the movement of the individual through each care centre, including facility name, date of admission, admission category, and date of discharge. - Procedures
Details outlining the primary operative procedure to stabilize the spinal column, including operative date, type of approach, if an implant was used, neural elements decompressed and intraoperative adverse events. - Interventions
Information detailing specific elements of care provided, including ventilation and rehabilitation therapies. - Outcomes
Information detailing specific measurements of physical functioning secondary to SCI, including quality of life, respiratory function, bowel and bladder management, pain description and management, spasticity, pressure injuries, and other secondary complications.

Praxis publishes reports on health economics aims and results. We also collaborate on publications which contribute to establishing evidence in this area.
RHSCIR Reports
Praxis publishes reports which provide a detailed analysis of some of the clinical and demographic data obtained from RHSCIR. A descriptive report is produced annually and these reports outline observed trends in the SCI population like age distribution, level and mechanism of injury, where people go after injury to receive treatment, the duration of their hospital stay and secondary complication information.
RHSCIR Community Report
In 2019, RHSCIR published a community report based on responses from participants who answered RHSCIR’s community-follow-up questionnaire five years after their injury.
